Despite popular belief, the use of animal testing within large beauty corporations is still extremely prevalent. Within the makeup industry over 70% of the top 50 beauty brands use animal testing. Makeup brands use animal testing to determine whether their products or ingredients in their products are harmful to humans. Company products or ingredients are force fed to animals, rubbed into their skin or put into their eyes. After the application of the product, the animals are observed for any irritation or side effects. Animal testing is extremely harmful to animals both physically and mentally. Animal testing on animals can cause tissue damage, chemical burns, death and physical disability in the long run. Mental effects from animal testing are depression and anxiety. The most common animals to be tested on are mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits but dogs, cats, fishes and birds are still used as well. To find out whether a makeup brand uses animal testing, look for a leaping bunny logo or search on the PETA website. (PETA or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is an animal rights organization). Examples of popular makeup brands that DON’T use animal testing are Tarte, Charlotte Tilbury, Rare Beauty, E.L.F Cosmetics, Makeup by Mario and many more.
